about
Walk On’ is the first of two songs loosely inspired by the life of Coretta Scott-King – the civil rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King Jr. The track ponders what life might feel like for someone living in the shadow of an icon, growing from sparse synths, voice and piano into blooming strings and brass, before dying away into something tired and fragile.
The song has existed in a few forms - firstly as with just voice & piano plus the odd synth, then as an orchestra piece, whereas this falls somewhere inbetween...
lyrics
I love a man who, they crowned the king of love
Feel the touch of man who, leaves no heart untouched.
Like his hand is on their pulse.
And it’s your cause, but I’d die for it.
Every-time I close my eyes, I see yours lit.
You picked a fight, well I’m on your side,
I see you walk on open eyed I shut mine tight.
I don’t believe him, when he speaks
though at his word, crowds gather they scatter.
He will not convince me, hand-on-knee.
saying “our time will come, you’ll see.”
Like I’m just another devotee.
And it’s your cause, but I’ll die for it.
Every-time I close my eyes, I see yours lit.
You picked a fight, well I’m by your side.
I see you walk on open eyed I shut mine tight.
This is too big for one man to carry, with our distance growing greater every day.
I dreamed that we got old and ordinary,
Now I just stay awake and pray that I won’t walk away.
